MY SUMMER HOLIDAYS AT DIEPENHEIM: DRAWINGS AND TOP 3

This time: Twente. Located in the eastern of the Netherlands. Rural and full of meadows, hedges, woods and castles. I stayed in 'Het Huisje aan het Centrumplein' (home at the center square) in Diepenheim. Perfect host and location. Just like last year I made a little vacation diary with drawings. So here we go:

I took a walk with my sister who lives nearby and came for a visit, we walked past the grave of Henny Vrienten (Dutch singer/songwriter), Huis te Diepenheim, the church etc;

The daily view out of my window: heaps of electric bikes (loads of retired cyclists who came to lunch nearby everyday)

TOP 3

1. Kasteel Weldam. Fun fact: all the castles in the area (6 in total) are still home to families. Therefore, you can only enter the gardens of this castle (for 1-3 euro). In the surroundings you will find an English chapel (with evensongs in December) and 60 farms belonging to the estate. You can recognize them by the black/yellow hatches.

2. Kringloopwinkel De Oude Spar (Geesteren). This thrift shop is located in a tiny village that is more church than village. It is located is the old building of the former Spar Supermarket. My sister gave me this tip and she was right: somewhat more expensive, but also very nice things and worth a little trip if you are looking for design and carefully selected vintage items. I bought a bracelet and stamp (total 3,50 euro).

3. Watermill den Haller. Still working, with a scoop wheel and a terrace nearby for food and drinks. 

Ok, last one: Kasteel Warmelo. This castle has beautiful gardens. The sand sculptures were not that impressive (my opinion); but it's gardens and flowers were. When I rounded the tour and wanted to get a drink, an elderly lady with a servant passed by with a piece of apple pie and coffee. They disappeared into the castle. So fun to see the home owner taking the pie upstairs and seeing her inside eating it. 

Deze keer was ik in Twente. Ik logeerde in Diepenheim, in het Huisje aan het centrumplein. Fijne plek en uitvalsbasis. Het is een dorp dat omgeven wordt door kastelen. Verder super rustig en vooral veel pensionado's, dus volgende keer weer iets meer reuring. Maar de omgeving is prachtig. 

TOP 3

1. Kasteel Weldam. Je kunt voor 1-3 euro de tuinen bezoeken en er zijn op het landgoed een Engelse kapel en prachtige boerderijen te vinden. Je herkent ze aan de zwartgele luiken. Alle kastelen worden bewoond; deze ook. 2. Kringloopwinkel De Oude Spar in Geesteren. Vol met mooie vintage spullen. Omdat het met liefde wordt verzameld een tikje duurder dan een reguliere kringloop, maar daar zijn de spullen ook zeker naar. Ik kocht voor 3,50 euro een stempel en armband. 3. Watermolen Den Haller aan de rand van Diepenheim. Met prachtig zwart opgeschilderd hout zoals bij een Twentse schuur, een werkend schoeprad en een terras ernaast.
